Oscar
G. Mayer III, the 95-years-old retired chairman of previously family-owned
Oscar Mayer, died this week.
Oscar
G. Mayer was the third family member to run the company prior to his retirement
in 1977 at age 62. This was shortly after the family-owned company made its
first $1 billion yearly profit. Not long after, the company was sold to food
giant, General Foods, who in turn sold it to its current owner, Kraft Foods.
In an odd, yet amusing display of marketing genius, the nephew of Oscar Mayer Sr. devised an idea to create a rolling advertisement that would get people talking about their new hot dog company. Officially dubbed the Wienermobile, it's been known worldwide as the staple of food-based automotive advertising and children's smiles for the past 73 years.
Several years ago, my wife, Mary Ellen, compiled a
Cook-Book entitled “Sharing My Favorites”. There are 427 recipes in 16
categories on 252 pages. It’s been reprinted several times. People have purchased it for their own
use, and for gifts to family and friends.
The original idea for the cookbook was simply to pass
some recipes on to our daughter when she got married. It was to be a single “Xerox” copied pages in a notebook,
but many people said they wanted a copy, so early on it turned into a
full-blown book.
It’s been fun for Mary Ellen to have people tell
her….that’s my favorite cookbook, or that’s the only cookbook I use. When we had the photography studio,
every time we saw a certain service-person turn into the studio in their truck,
we knew that she was coming to pick up a new batch of cookbooks for her friends
who had seen hers and asked her to get them one.
Mary-Ellen still has a limited supply from the last printing
and they are $15 each (plus shipping if needed). She has easily enough recipes to do another book, but don't think I'm ready to tackle that project. In the meantime, I continue to enjoy her cooking.

Wonder if the City has wondered why some people are reluctant to shop downtown? Yes I got a parking ticket while meeting a friend for lunch at Harry's. Other side of the street has no meters. I was parked ON THE TOWN SQUARE where meters are installed.

The land is owned by the University of Florida (having been bequeathed by the Carmichael Estate) and leased back to the operator of the Springs on a long-term lease.
I worked at Silver Springs for 3 years in high school. Worked at the "Soda Shop" owned by Dizzy Thomas. The cokes then were 10, 15, and 20 cents for small, medium, and large. Times have really changed.

Last week, Apple and AT&T released Version 3 of the iPhone. They have sold over 1 million of the new phones.
In addition, they released version 3 of the SOFTWARE.
I still have a version 2 of the iPhone but when I downloaded the version 3 SOFTWARE to it, it gave me many more capabilities with my current phone.
The photograph looks like the phone is thick...but the real phone is quite slim.
